The Tax Code Is 6,871 Pages Long. That Is Not an Accident.
The most powerful nation in history cannot file its own taxes. Ordinary Americans spend 6.5 billion hours per year on tax compliance — more time than it takes to build every car, truck, and plane made in America. This is not complexity. It is a business model.
H&R Block spent $3 million lobbying against simplified tax filing in 2022 alone. Intuit, maker of TurboTax, spent over $10 million lobbying Congress between 2008 and 2023 to prevent the IRS from offering free filing directly to taxpayers. They succeeded. The Free File program, created in 2002 as a compromise, was structured to benefit the companies that lobbied for it. ProPublica documented in 2019 that Intuit deliberately hid its free product from Google search results to steer eligible users toward paid versions.
The IRS already has most of the information it needs to fill out your return. They receive your W-2. They receive your 1099. They know your income. In 36 countries — including Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom — the government sends citizens a pre-filled return. You check it, sign it, done. The IRS attempted to build exactly this system. The tax preparation lobby spent decades and hundreds of millions of dollars ensuring it never launched.
The self-employed bear the sharpest edge of this system. A freelancer, a contractor, a small business owner receives a 1099 for gross revenue — every dollar that passed through their hands, regardless of costs. The IRS sees the gross number. It does not automatically see the platform fees, the equipment, the vehicle, the materials. The business owner must prove their own deductions, at their own expense, to a system that defaults to the number on the form. When errors are made — by an accountant, by a software program, by a misclassification the tax code's complexity made inevitable — the penalty falls on the taxpayer. The accountant is not liable. The software company is not liable. The 6,871 pages produced the error. The person navigating them pays for it.
This is not a bug. It is the architecture. The complexity exists because complexity is profitable to the people who profit from your confusion. The 6,871 pages were written by lobbyists for the industries that charge you to navigate them. This is documented. It is not a theory.
